Peru- Iquitos

Well Iquitos was a whole different world from Lima.
We flew into the airport around 10 am and met up with some members at the airport. We were so exhausted though and went to our hotel to check in, shower, change and nap for a  bit. We needed an hour to recooperate from lack of sleep and not having a break.
We stayed at the Amazon Apart Hotel. It's in Belen in Iquitos. Totally recommend it. It was only about $40/night and came with a good breakfast. It also has a pool which is adorned with sleeping kittens all around the patio (that was the best part).
We met up with our friends after a little bit of R&R and began our walk around Iquitos visiting members, seeing the river, the houses on stilts and the homes that would soon be floating during the rainy season. It was the most fascinating place I have ever seen. The smells were different, the people were different, but the church is always the same. We had a good time walking around in the heat and seeing the people. We had some fun adventures on the moto-taxis and saw lots of dogs and cats everywhere.
We had FHE at Rhonda's house with a bunch of the local youth. It was a fun night where we shared testimonies, played games and Ryan taught a lesson. Everyone wanted to talk to Ryan and it was so fun to get to be part of this evening. There are so many people, especially youth, on church records in Iquitos but most of them ar inactive an it's hard to try and get all these thousands of people to come back. But I hope that us being there might have done just a little bit to even get one person to come back.
Well the next day we went to this amazing animal park called Quistacoche. It was just outside of town. And it was also only 3 soles to get in... That's about 1 US dollar. So, since most residents don't have the time or money to spend to go here, Ryan and I invited 9 other people to come along. It was beautiful! There were jaguars and monkeys. Amazon river dolphins and monkeys. Snakes and lizards. It was awesome. We walked around for a couple hours there are saw the animals and then we went to the little beach they have next to this jungle lake and played and swam in the water for another little while. We met some French visitors and challenged them to a game of soccer (of course) and then we ate while it began to rain. I will say before you watch any videos, that remember we are not in an American zoo, there are no real barriers between you and the animals and yes, you can pet them. It's every child's dream zoo. :)
The next day we went around and had a great time hanging out with the Hill family. They were the family that Ryan lived with while he was serving there and also had a pet monkey named Martin that they found in the rafters there. We had a great dinner with them and then went to the Plaza de Armas (the main square of the city) and walked around. We went to the river front and walked through the shops, and got some ice cream. It was such a fun and relaxing evening. We just love the Hills.
The next morning we had to pack up our bags and check out of the hotel. But we took the chance to walk through the market fully one time before we left. Well, it was interesting. It smelled absolutely awful. I gagged so much as we were walking along. But we saw some amazing things. I have never seen so many types of fish, turtles, snakes, fruits and vegetables. It was amazing to see the things that are sold and bought here in the market. We saw cigarettes being rolled with fresh tobacco. Saw fresh honey being collected. Played with some big fat caterpillars called suri that they skewer and fry and eat. And everywhere, there were dogs, cats, pet onkeys and owls and sloths and people selling their goods. Lastly we stopped at one of Ryan's converts little shops. She is the mother of the stake president and she is amazing. We sat with her for a little while and she got us some fresh coconuts that we drank the delicious coconut water from and also some fresh guava fruits. It was so fun. But it was so sad to leave her. She began to cry when we were leaving and she gave me one of her rings for me to remember her by. I didn't need a ring to remember that amazing woman.
We then ran to our last lunch with the Hills. We had paiche and ceviche as well as amazing platanos and rice. It was delicious and great to have one last meal with them.
Well then we had to head back to the airport to fly back to Lima!

The jungle.

Peru- Last day in Lima

Well we arrived back in Lima after an amazing last lunch with the Machiavello's in Huaral. It was my favorite part of the time there. I got to make my favorite food in the world aji de gallina with Hermana Aurora. We made it together from start to finish. I was so happy. It was great to see the whole chicken just stewing away in the pot. Feet and all. I had an amazing time having her show me how to make the sauce, cook the peppers and prepare it. Ah I was in heaven. And to top it all off, we had the most amazing strawberry milk I have ever been blessed to drink. Simply pureed strawberries and milk. Nothing better.
We went to the Lima Temple to walk around. We were so happy to be there and, even though we couldn't do any temple work, it was amazing to see all the patrons who had obviously spent so much time and money to just travel to the temple. The hotel at the temple was full of Peruvians and we had a lovely time walking around the grounds. It is a beautiful temple in a nice part of Lima.
After all that, we went back to the Alca's for one last night. We had a wonderful dinner and then had some people from the ward come over to say goodbye. The Teo's knitted me a beautiful blue scarf. I was so happy to have that to remember them by. We also celebrated a birthday and had a cake and sang Happy Birthday. It was a great way to end our trip to Peru.
We got on our flight the next morning and after a long 12 hours, we were back in America. Overall, it was an amazing trip. I can't really explain how much it changed my life to meet these people. I hope that you could at least get a semblance of my emotions from these posts. But if not, I hope yuou can see the amazing place that is Peru from all the videos and pictures.

Thanks for reading through all the posts! :)

My best friend

I love my husband. He is the most amazing man in my life.
Ryan helped teach Relief Society last weekend, it was awesome. But it made me think about how much he does for everyone and how amazing he is. I have never known him to turn down an opportunity to serve someone or to help out.
I adore this guy. Every moment that I am with him, I learn more about him and love him more. He has helped me grow throughout our marriage and I cannot thank him enough.
Needless to say, life is amazing with my husband and I know that there is no one else in the world that I would rather spend forever with.
Ryan starts his Master's program now and I know that he is so excited for the chance to do research and narrow down his academic pathway and have a ton of fun along the way.
I am a gusher and I could literally go on FOREVER about the amazing man that I am married to. But, needless to say, I am the luckiest girl alive and I look forward every day to being with him. Being sealed to him for time and all eternity is the greatest comfort and blessing to be thankful for every day :)
So grateful for my life.

The calm before the storm

Well we have been busy bees. I feel like there is never a moment to breathe and then, when I get one, I don't want to be responsible and we go to Seven Peaks instead... It's a vicious cycle that doesn't allow for anything to get done. But it sure is nice. So we will probably stick to that for a while :)

So we have been enjoying out new ward. Our ward members are awesome and we have neighbors that are constantly giving us delicious squash... YUM! Our Bishop is a quiet literary genius with a PhD from Harvard and we have some amazing people who we have become good friends with already.

We (well, really only me) got vaccinated for Peru! I got pumped full of shots (eh, not so bad) but suffered horribly from yellow fever for the past two weeks (never want to go through that again). But Ryan is a trooper and put up with me as I was a sickly fool on the couch. I am kinda going plan-crazy trying to get everything together for us to go to Peru. I am so excited I can't even explain. I am so excited to meet the people and play with the kids, swim in the Amazon River and see bugs the size of a newborn! Alright, I will probably cry when I see the spiders that will for sure inhabit the underside of any bed I sleep in. I am sure their spidey sense has told them to prepare for the feast of my American flesh. But I will sleep in a tent made of steel wool if I have to. I do not mind. I can do this all without worrying about all the strange jungle diseases that I am now immune to thanks to the insanely happy woman who made my arms swollen and bruised with her sharp objects. Needless to say I am salivating right now at the thought of aji de gallina, fresh ceviche, and bubbly Inca Kola. Life will be complete.

I have found a way to keep sane at work while Ryan goes to school! It's this great site called Coursera where they offer free college classes from Universities like Stanford, Princeton, etc. They are the perfect way for me to keep learning without the cost of being an actual student and without the stress of tests and homework. I simply just get to to learn! It is so nice to do something productive with my day instead of listening to the same old annoying music or watching tv shows. Anyway, I am a fan.

And, last but not least, there is a new angel in this world! Her name is Julia and she is the new daughter of one of my closest friends, Kristen and her hubby Mackay. She is only a couple days old and I just adore her. Needless to say, I am DYING to have a baby. There is nothing like seeing how children shape lives and change everything. I literally cannot wait to have one of my own... So, in sha Allah, I can announce that little bit of news soon! ;)

I know that life is going to get crazy different in just a little over a week from now. Ryan will start his Masters at BYU and still be working part time both at the Church and also for BYU as a TA or RA as well as working with Zaytoon and his consulting company. So yes, life is going to be different. I will be going to work by myself everyday and at some point during his Master's we hope to have a baby. So yes, these next two years will be a ton of hard work and getting used to a new schedule but it will be good practice for when we move for Ryan's PhD! We have a great life :)

Oh and we leave for Peru in 12 days... CANNOT WAIT!!

Do you hear the people sing...?

I swear that our life moves in themes. I don't understand it but I have been learning to embrace it. Either way, this past week has been a musical theme and it has been smashing.
So we got back from our California escapade and the very next day we went off to Cedar City to go see Les Miserables. The Utah Shakespeare Festival is actually a great program! They have beautiful facilities and the performances are awesome! This was our first show there and we will definitely be returning.
So Les Miserables is our favorite play in the Coles house. We both saw it (not together) for the first time in London when we were younger and it has stayed with us both through the years.
Though nothing can beat that performance at the Queen's Theater in London long ago, I have to say that the show in Cedar City is right up there. I liked this performance better than other plays I have seen in Salt Lake.
Well anyway, we headed down to the theater and found that they have a replica of the Globe Theater! It is awesome! Such a cool outdoor theater! We were inside a different theater for Les Mis. Titus was being performed outside. The vocals were fabulous and I of course cried my way through many parts. But the end always gets me. So powerful and we just loved it! We cannot wait for the new movie to come out this Christmas!
Well next in our week of musical noteworthiness, it was time for Journey! We <3 Journey in the Coles House. And when I saw that they were coming to Utah, I could not miss that. Journey, Loverboy and Pat Benetar are a great combination. The concert was at USANA Amphitheater and it was a beautiful night for a concert. So, we had an AMAZING time at this concert. We loved all the music and Pat Benetar killed it. Ryan and I both decided that having Pat Benetar and her husband in the family is always a plus. They were so cute together onstage and they have been married 34 years. It's nice to see some relationships in the music industry that last longer than a few months. Also we ran into some friends who were in Ryan's ward in California but have since moved to Utah. So it was great to see them and it was a really fun evening. Great concert.

AWFUL haricut that was in our view the whole time.... I felt so bad for this 17 year old girl...
Pat Benetar. She is quite awesome.
Sorry this picture decided to only focus somewhat on our legs... But you can at least see the cool theater they have built there!

California Dreamin'...

So we went to California this week. We started out in the south and went to visit Ryan's family for their huge week of birthdays and to get some sun.
Ryan and I got there on Saturday and had a delicious bbq dinner with the family and autns and uncles and cousins and Nanny. It was complete with amazing eclairs and birthday songs. It was a nice relaxing evening to sit in the spa and go swimming.
Well the next morning we slept in and relaxed until church at 1 pm. We went to the single's ward that Ryan's dad works with in the bishopric and they had a cool meeting where, after sacrament, they had lunch and then an hour of 'Meet the Mormons.' It was fun to have about 15 non-LDS attendees who were able to ask questions and get to know the doctrines of our gospel and it was a nice atmosphere that was very open and comfortable. A very neat idea! After church we went to the OC Fair and got to see some animals, huge produce, smelled some marijuana, and saw some great friends. Got to ride some rides and I lost my favorite sunglasses. So not worth that ride. But oh well. Its just what happens!
Well On Monday, we had another fun little bit of excitement... Once again, Ryan and I had to be at the scene of a car accident. Needless to say, I am tired of them... Thankfully though, it was no one from the family. Anyway, this is the story. We were driving along and suddenly Pam and Maddie gasped from up front. A car was run off the road and shoved into the concrete barrier almost pushing it over the bridge that they were on. Insane. We of course stopped and Ryan and Evan helped the poor girl out of her car. I called 911 for the second time in a week and we directed traffic for a bit until crazy Californian drivers decided not to pay attention and almost caused more accidents and the emergency services arrived. Needless to say, the other driver was mad and was trying to not take blame. The girl who was almost pushed off the bridge probably had a broken arm or wrist since it was swollen and bruised and her car was totaled. Roland was intrigued by having all the firefighters and paramedics and police officers around us in the car and then, once everyone was settled, we left to go on our way.
Tuesday was our last day in Orange County. It was a great day that we just laid out by the beach in San Clemente and dug for sand crabs with Roland. And just relaxed in the sun. It was a beautiful day and we had so much fun!
Well before we knew it, we had to leave Wednesday morning for our flight to San Francisco! We were so excited! It was our first time there and we had a lot of fun things planned! We were heading up there for a fundraiser for an NGO that Ryan has been doing some consulting work for. Well we got in early on Wednesday and went right into the city. We walked around Union Square and had some great burgers at Cafe Mason. Then we decided to walk through Chinatown and saw some beautiful churches, smelled some great food and saw some fun shops and people. It was a really pretty day and the walk was great through Chinatown and North Beach. We went into a great map shop in North Beach. I seriously wanted everything. But finally we ended up at Pier 39. It was so pretty! We rented some bikes right away and rode from the Pier to the Golden Gate Bridge and across it to Sausilito on the other side of the Bay. It was a crazy ride across the Bridge! I do not like heights and that bridge is high. But it has great views and the ride was so fun to the little resort town. We had some good pizza and ice cream and just walked around. We met people from all over the world and when it was time to head back, we actually took a taxi back since the ferry would have taken FOREVER and I spotted some Arabs that Ryan went and talked to. They were from Yemen and so nice! They gave us a ride back that we split with another American couple.
Afterwards, we walked more around the Pier and walked back to Union Square along the bay.
The next day we went to Berkeley campus and met with some admissions counselors about their PhD programs for Ryan. Its a great school but very different from BYU. That is for sure. So who knows where we will go... Still have some time to figure that out. Last, but not least, we went back downtown for our fundraiser. We got all dressed up and went to the lounge that the event was being held at. It was hosted by Eliza Dushku and Joss Whedon! Very fun! It was an interesting night and fun to look back on. We had a great time! We left for Utah early the next morning and got back into Provo and were so happy to just relax.

It was a great vacation that was seriously non stop but we loved it! Here are some pics! :)
